WHO WAS AENESIDEMUS? Aenesidemus (1st cn. B.C.E.) Aenesidemus (1st cn. B.C.E.) Aenesidemus was the founder pyrrhoian skeptticism . He was born at Gnossus in Crete, but lived at Alexandria and flourished shortly after Cicero . Aenesidemus originally was a member of Plato’s Academy. One head of the Academy, Philo, turned to a kind of moderate fallibilism, during which one could assent to several beliefs and gain knowledge, although not certainty, while a later head, Antiochus , propounded a dogmatic and syncretistic philosophy, claiming that at heart Plato, the Stoics, and lots of other philosophers were really saying an equivalent thing . THE TEN MODES OF AENESIDEMUS   AENESIDEMUS  is taken into the creator of the ten modes of Aenesidemus (also referred to as ten tropes of Aenesidemus)—although whether he invented the tropes or simply systematized them from prior Pyrrhonist works is unknown.
